Elisha I. Peterson Sost 200 Individual Representation I. Standards Addressed The NCSS standard being addressed by the lesson plan is 4. Individual Development and Identity. The performance expectation of the lesson is for the students to describe ways family, religion, gender, ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic status, and other group and cultural influences contribute to the development of a sense of self. II. Expected Learning Outcome The student will discover how their idea of themselves relates to other group and cultural influences. The student will evaluate how these influences affect their own development. III. Evaluation: The students will be evaluated on the artifact that they create. The artifact will be evaluated on its completeness and its accompanying paragraph. The paragraph should include a description of their art, why they created what they did, and how the artifact relates to different aspects of society. IV. Curriculum: This lesson could be taught in a psychology, sociology, or interpersonal communications class. V. Instruction: This lesson should take two days, and is good to use at the beginning of the term as a get-to-know everyone exercise. On the first day, the students are to create an artifact that represents them. The students should be provided with various art supplies such as poster board, construction paper, markers, colored pencils, and modeling clay. When the artifact is complete, the students are to write a paragraph describing their art and why they created what they did. The paragraph should also make connections to the parts of society that are related to the artifact (family, gender, ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic status, and other group and cultural influences). On the second day the students would share their artifacts with the whole class or in groups. At the end of the class period a class discussion would be held on what aspects of society influence the development of self, and brainstorm examples that the students have witnessed in their own lives and in their surrounding communities. VI. Discussion Questions: · What aspects of society and culture influenced the creation of your artifact? · What role does society and culture play in your sense of self? · What are some examples of __________ that contribute to your sense of self? (Family, religion, gender, ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic status, etc.) · Could anyone develop isolated from society and culture? What would they look like? What kind of ideas would they have?
